Community
Engagement

A healthy planet and strong communities are everyone’s business.

Calsense is committed to improving the health of the planet as much as we are committed to improving our community. We actively participate in or support a diverse range of organizations and initiatives, including our local Chamber of Commerce, non-profit groups, educational/school events, industry programs, and more. These partnerships all have one thing in common: sharing the message of sustainability with everyone we possibly can.

Education

Education of students at all ages is important to Calsense. Youth STEM programs are especially meaningful to Calsense, because they give all students the opportunity to learn about the science and engineering of a more sustainable future. Calsense has been a sponsor at events like Super STEM Saturday at California State University, San Marcos and Spin for Schools fundraisers through the Carlsbad Education Foundation. The team loves supporting and attending events like these to directly interact with students and families in the community and share the Calsense story.

Many Calsense team members are alumni of California State University, San Marcos and have been involved in alumni groups, mentorship programs and events at the University. President A.J. van de Ven has been especially involved with the school since he taught the course “Environmental Issues, Policies and Regulations for Water Managers” in 2018.

Calsense continues to seek any opportunities to get involved in the community, education and local organizations that are focused on environmental conservation and the improvement of society and our planet.

Non-Profit organizations

Calsense seeks opportunities to work with organizations that share the vision for a more sustainable future for all. Calsense began working with ECOLIFE in early 2018. One aspect of ECOLIFE that Calsense was able to directly get involved with is their aquaponics. ECOLIFE works to get small-scale aquaponics systems into classrooms to teach students the science behind the sustainable ecosystem, as well as its ability to produce food quickly and efficiently. The organization’s headquarters also house a large-scale aquaponics system that uses a specially engineered Calsense controller to manage the water of the system. Using Calsense technology, the system detects leaks, tracks water usage and measures chemical levels. Calsense looks forward to continuing the development of this technology to support sustainable agriculture and a more environmentally conscious future. The relationship between Calsense and ECOLIFE has continued to evolve and now President A.J. van de Ven recently joined the ECOLIFE board (in early 2020). Other members of the Calsense team have also started getting involved in the organization by attending and volunteering at events.

As of 2019, Calsense became a business member of the Agua Hedionda Lagoon Foundation. The Foundation’s mission is to inspire people through education and outreach and to preserve the Agua Hedionda Lagoon as an accessible and healthy San Diego watershed. As neighbors and fellow chamber members, Calsense is proud to support this local organization. Below you will find photos of the Calsense company party that took place in December of 2019 at the Agua Hedionda Discovery.

Carlsbad Chamber of Commerce

Calsense has been involved with the Carlsbad Chamber of Commerce since 2017. The Chamber has provided Calsense the opportunity to engage with other local businesses and community leaders through events and involvement with various committees.  Calsense is a member of the Green Business Committee and has been able to encourage the community to support local businesses that are conscious of their environmental impact. The chamber has also facilitated tours of local facilities to teach about sustainable business practices.  Over the last several years, Calsense has been nominated for and awarded several Chamber Business Distinction Awards,  including “Small Business Sustainability Award”, “Best Place to Work – Small Business” and most recently, Office Manager, Danae Kasarjian was awarded “Workplace MVP” in 2020. Calsense encourages all employees to engage with the Chamber and attend networking and educational events when possible. Calsense is grateful for a supportive and like-minded local chamber.
